EPA Releases Proposed Finding on Leaded AvGas

From Flying magazine…

“The aviation community was expecting the announcement and points to progress on unleaded fuel in the market.

On Friday, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its proposed finding on leaded aviation fuel, triggering a response from the consortium of general aviation associations that have been working on the removal of lead from avgas with the FAA and industry partners. Under the EAGLE (Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions) initiative, the collective has demonstrated in recent months its commitment to sunsetting 100LL in a safe, deliberate manner.

The Proposed Endangerment Finding for Lead Emissions from Aircraft Engines that Operate on Leaded Fuel does not call for any immediate ban on avgas containing lead. It’s simply the initial step required for the agency to exercise its authority to “address this source of lead pollution,” which is well known to the GA industry.”

Lead spews from some Southern California airports; cleaner fuel is coming

“She discovered lots of not great news, with studies showing higher instances of everything from asthma to heart disease to preterm births for those who live and work near airports. But one fact she found stopped her in her tracks.

Shepler learned that, while leaded gas has been fully banned in automobiles due to health concerns since 1996, it’s still widely used by many small planes and helicopters. And out of more than 20,000 airports nationwide, data from the Environmental Protection Agency shows Long Beach Airport ranks No. 2 in country for lead pollution, with planes there emitting nearly 1,600 pounds of lead each year into neighborhoods like the one where Shepler’s twins attend school.”

LA residents sue FAA over changed flight paths out of Burbank and Van Nuys airports

“We live in a home that we worked our entire lives for, and one day we woke up and were in a war zone in terms of the noise and the pollution and the chaos,” said Save Our Skies LA member and Sherman Oaks resident Chloe King. “I’m a writer who works at home and can no longer work at home. I can’t go in my backyard and enjoy it. I can’t have dinner parties. I can’t take hikes in the public parks.”

The reason: About 200 low-flying flights that pass over her house daily.”

FAA study finds that most Americans are ‘highly annoyed’ by aircraft noise

From Fox news…

“In a report published last month, the Neighborhood Environmental Survey (NES), conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), found that nearly two-thirds of people polled were “highly annoyed” by aviation noise — even more than road traffic or noise from their neighbors.

Compared with prior studies, the national curve showed “substantially more people highly annoyed for a given Day-Night Average Sound Level (DNL) aircraft noise exposure level,” researchers said. The most recent study of human annoyance on aircraft noise by the U.S. government – conducted in 1992 – found that just 12.3% were irritated by the same DNL of 65 dB.”

Leaded gas was phased out 25 years ago. Why are these planes still using toxic fuel?

“That’s because Reid-Hillview is one of 13,000 so-called general aviation airports, from which leaded-fuel piston-engine aircraft fly. While leaded gasoline was fully phased out in 1996 with the passage of the Clean Air Act, it still fuels a fleet of 170,000 piston-engine airplanes and helicopters. Leaded aviation fuel, or avgas, now makes up “the largest remaining aggregate source of lead emissions to air in the U.S.,” according to the Environmental Protection Agency.”

FAA study finds noise from airplanes, helicopters far more annoying than other sources

From The Washington Post…

“The first Federal Aviation Administration noise survey in nearly 30 years found more people are bothered by aircraft noise than before.”

LA Sues FAA Over Plane Noise at Hollywood Burbank Airport

“The city of Los Angeles sued the Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday over a shift in flight patterns for planes departing Hollywood Burbank Airport that has dramatically increased noise levels for residents and businesses.”

Another New Airline Arrives at Hawthorne – FLOAT

Conducting practice flights right now, FLOAT’s commercial airline service says it will start in January 2020.

Another commercial airline is landing at Hawthorne on a regular basis – FLOAT Fly Over All the Traffic.  The big planes are not as loud as the Surf Air turbo-prop PC-12s, but still big, noisy airplanes.

And yet another commercial airline using Hawthorne, which is not a designated as a commercial airport.
